A Day Trip For Brighter Days Ahead

Some Inspiration When Staying In One Of Our Holiday Lets

May is probably one of our favourite months at Preston Hall. The sun is out, the trees have blossom on them and the garden and grounds are greening up. Everything seems a little more positive and has a spring in their step.

We thought we’d put together a little day trip idea for when the weather is a little better to give us all something to look forward to and to get through these last few months of Winter. We also do this outing quite frequently.

First stop is definitely Bostock Bakery for coffee and pastry. It’s in East Linton and easily accessible from the A1 if you are passing. You can sit in if you like, but we often get takeaway bits and then head straight to the beach to enjoy them there. Something about sitting on a bench looking out to sea and sipping on the coffee just makes it more special. I’d say some of our favourite items from Bostock are their Pistachio Cruffin, Almond Croissant, and Cinnamon Bun – can you tell we’ve got a sweet tooth.

Once we’ve gathered our fuel from East Linton, we head to Gullane Beach, which is maybe another 10 minutes from there. It is a slightly longer route including Bostock, but its quite a nice route so we never mind. Gullane is a lovely village surrounded by golf courses, with a good pub (The Bonnie Badger), a few quaint little shops, and some lovely houses to look at. The beach is about a mile long and is really good for children as the car park isn’t too far from the actual beach and it has good bathroom facilities, which is always a bonus. There are fun rock pools at both ends of the beach and good walks if you continue in either direction. We normally turn left if we have the children with us, but if we just have dogs then we go right and keep going along the path that takes you along to some beautiful secluded coves and an incredibly peaceful pine wood.

Once we’ve had a good leg stretch why not try Drift for a light lunch. It is just the other side of North Berwick and has spectacular views out to the Firth of Forth and Bass Rock. If your starving then we’d say try the Pull Pork Burger, but if you just want something to keep you going then maybe have their Drift Roll.

After lunch why not head to North Berwick. It does have a nice beach, but it also have lovely shops and is a great town to walk around in. If you are into art then Greens and Blues Fine Art Gallery or Westgate Galleries if worth a little browse as they often have beautiful pieces by local artists. If the weather is nice it is worth taking the short steep walk up North Berwick Law to see the view out to towards Bass Rock and back towards Edinburgh. There is the tale of why the whale bone is located at the top, but I’ll leave that story for those who are going to venture to the top.

Perhaps you might be hungry for an early supper by this stage and want to enjoy the longer evenings, then we would suggest either heading to Lobster Shack or The Rocketeer for a seafood dinner. Lobster Shack is located in the habour and as the name suggests is just a shack so all food is takeaway. We are partial to a bit of lobster as a treat so you could grab your meal and go and sit on a bench looking out to see. At The Rocketeer you can either sit in (but worth booking ahead), or they do a great Seafood Platter to takeaway which give you a bit of everything and is delicious.

With a full tummy and lungs full of fresh sea air, the journey back to Preston Hall is about 35 minutes.

We are getting excited just thinking about the months ahead. We hope this day trip inspires you to plan your trip.
